Emily TS #1&2

On Wednesday, March 6th at 4 pm, I tutored CIES student Sulaiman for the first time. This was my first time not only tutoring, but also meeting a stranger from the Middle East. I had a preconceived notion that because he was a male from the Middle East, he wouldn't be comfortable with a female tutoring him. This turned out to be false, as he was very kind and open-minded. He is a level one beginner, so there were some difficulties in communication of course, but we quickly settled in and got to work after some introductions. I learned that his main goals in his English journey are to focus on speaking and listening. As he had two tests the next day, my immediate goal was to help him on grammar points that he was having trouble with. The main trouble points for him were object pronouns and possessive pronouns. I used our environment around us to help give him some examples. Afterwards, I had him come up with some of his own example sentences. It took a little while for him to grasp the concept, but once he did, he was able to quickly come up with basic sentences containing both grammar points. We also went over his reading passages and vocabulary for his test. By the end of the session he could use new vocabulary and grammar in his sentences! It was a very rewarding experience. I would normally stick to 50 minutes for a tutoring session, but since we both had free time and he was having some trouble understanding the grammar points, we ended up working for two hours. We conversed for a short while after the tutoring session and I got to learn more about him, as he was avid to talk about his life and Saudi Arabia. Overall, this was an enriching experience in many ways, and I look forward to tutoring him again and learning how I can become a better tutor.

Met with Do-Jun on 4/12. It was our first session so we mostly just talked and went over his expectations and what he was looking to learn. His English was very good, he just expressed that he wasn't comfortable with his vocabulary and when to use it. So I'm going to try to pay attention to some phrases I hear relatively often and teach them to him our next session.

Ceara TS#15

Had my last session with Marcelle on 5/29. Since it was our last day, we decided to just play a game. I had her “teach” me how to play monopoly. She cheated multiple times and won, obviously. But I was very satisfied with the session because it was the most I’d ever seen her talk. Our parting was kind of sad for me. She asked if I was coming tomorrow and I said no because it was my last day, but she very confidently said that I was coming tomorrow. Overall, tutoring her has been a very worthwhile experience and I’d do it again in a heartbeat.

Ceara TS#11

Met with Marcelle on 5/22. She did much better today then last week. The library was doing a book sale today and the librarian offered to pitch in a dollar if I wanted to incorporate it into our lesson. I also gave Marcelle on of my dollars and she picked out two books for herself. She was incredibly happy and I think that helped out a lot with the lesson. We also made a break through with learning the best way for her to learn words. She has these flashcards with words on the front and pictures on the back that we've used before. In the middle of using them she started spelling them on her white board and picking out sounds and writing those. Like "in" she found in king and "ra" in straw. So I got her to pick a sound and organize her word cards to pick out the ones that had that sound and she did really well!
