The second class I observed was Mrs. Felicia's reading class level 1. In this class, she was teaching the students how to recognize when to produce short vowel sounds when reading. She put about 15 different three lettered words like; hat, sun, sit, cat, etc. She had them mark an x under the vowel and then if the vowel was followed by a consonant she would have them put a star above it. This would indicate to the students that the vowel is a short vowel sound. We then as a class we practiced pronouncing all the words. I really liked how the students were willing to volunteer to read the words. I saw improvement from students in their reading skills in just one session.
