On Tuesday, April 23rd, at 12 pm, I tutored Vatimetou. We technically had two sessions, so our topic for the first session was about her field, which is civil engineering, and the second session was about reviewing past grammar. For the civil engineering session, I had her explain what a civil engineer does, and then I had her review some construction vocabulary in English because she only knows the terms in French. After she reviewed the words, I had her explain a basic idea of the construction process in English. Because she is mostly learning English to assist with her work, I felt that making the session about civil engineering would not only boost her intrinsic motivation but would actually benefit her career.
After a break, we started again and reviewed some past grammar that she had difficulty with. I have found that both of my tutees have struggled with the perfect tenses because it doesn’t exist in Arabic. For this reason, we did a final review using all the perfect tenses, and I asked her to tell me how she knows when to use them. She still had some issues regarding proper conjugations of verbs with the different subjects of points of view, so we did a little reviewing of those, but I feel like this is something she will probably need to work on her own as well. Overall, I think Vatimetou has learned a lot this session! Although the change isn’t as dramatic as I found with Sulaiman, I think that she has definitely polished up some of her grammar, speaking, and writing skills. She is also a fun and wonderful person and I am so glad I got to work with her!
